“Goa Govt Cracks Down on PoP Idols: Revenue Dept & Pollution Control Board Conduct Inspections”
Panaji: The Revenue Department, in collaboration with the Pollution Control Board, Police, and Mamlatdars, conducted inspections of Chitrashalas (idol-making workshops and outlets) in South Goa District to ensure that Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols are not being sold during the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festival.
The Goa government has banned the import, sale, and transportation of PoP Ganesh idols across the state, citing environmental concerns. PoP idols are known to pollute water bodies and harm aquatic life during immersion ceremonies. In contrast, clay idols are biodegradable and dissolve naturally in water, making them a more sustainable option.
The inspections were carried out in various talukas of South Goa, including Ponda and Mormugao. In Ponda, Mamlatdar Bhiku Gawas reported that no PoP idols were found during the inspection. However, the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) found 24 idols with PoP content exceeding 10% in random checks across the state.
The Goa government is promoting eco-friendly celebrations by providing subsidies to local artisans who craft traditional clay idols. Under the scheme, artisans receive ₹200 per clay idol, up to a maximum of 250 idols. This initiative not only supports local craftsmen but also encourages devotees to switch to sustainable options.
The subsidy scheme has given a new lease of life to Goa’s artisans, who have been making idols for generations. With the ban on PoP idols, artisans are now focusing on creating clay idols that are not only eco-friendly but also aesthetically pleasing. The government’s support has helped artisans control prices and procure raw materials.
