Prevalence of Diabetes in India: Diabetes is a growing challenge in India with an estimated 8.7% diabetic population in the age group of 20 and 70 years. The rising prevalence of diabetes and other noncommunicable diseases is driven by a combination of factors rapid urbanization, sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy diets, tobacco use, and increasing life expectancy. Obesity and overweight are the most important risk factors responsible for diabetes. Much of the diabetes burden can be prevented or delayed by behavioral changes favoring a healthy diet and regular physical activity.
Covid and Endocrinology: The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, gains cellular access through the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor. In humans, ACE2 receptors are expressed in several endocrine glands, including the pancreas, thyroid gland, ovaries, and testes The endocrine system is particularly vulnerable to destruction and alteration in function because of COVID-19. Thyroid dysfunction and hyperglycemia is widely reported in patients infected with COVID-19.
