Had offered to take up Goa’s case in Mhadei matter pro bono: Khalap

MAPUSA: Emphasising on the need to save Mhadei River, the Congress Party’s North Goa Lok Sabha candidate Adv Ramakant Khalap has said that he had offered to take up Goa’s case pro bono in the water dispute matter. However, he said that the state government back then did not respond to his offer.

Congress North Goa candidate Adv. Ramakant Khalap  was speaking locals after seeking  blessings at the Sai Baba Temple in Candolim, ahead of the elections on May 7

“I had offered to lead Goa’s case pro bono in the Mhadei Water Disputes Tribunal, Supreme Court and the High Court. I had put up this proposal before then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to allow me to fight Goa’s defence. However, there was no response. But now we see that Karnataka has taken away our water. There are many other rivers like the Mhadei that flow from the Western Ghats down the Sahyadris into Goa. What will happen if these rivers meet a similar fate?” Khalap said.

Khalap also said that judging from the feedback across all 20 constituencies across North Goa, the election for the North Goa seat “won’t be tough”.

“I have experience as a lawyer, a teacher, a social worker, an MLA, a minister, an opposition leader, and a Union minister. I have a fixed vote bank in North Goa. I have well-wishers and friends across the constituency. My work during the 18-month tenure in Delhi as Member of Parliament in 1996 has been recognised by the people who say that I have done good work as compared to the past 25 years where nothing can be seen,” he said.

“This election won’t be tough for me judging from the feedback that I have got from the 20 constituencies. However, it won’t be easy too. But I am confident of winning by a margin of 50,000 votes,” he added.
