Neglect of Goa’s Statues: A Legacy in Disrepair”
The maintenance of life-size statues in Goa has been neglected by the authorities, leaving many of these monuments in a state of disrepair. Statues of notable figures like Bhausaheb Bandodkar, Manohar Parrikar, and TB Cunha, among others, are scattered throughout the state, including in Panaji, Ponda, Margao, and other areas.
These statues not only pay tribute to the contributions of these individuals but also serve as a reminder of Goa’s rich history and cultural heritage. However, the lack of maintenance has resulted in damage from natural elements, with bird droppings defacing some of the statues.
In contrast, other states like Karnataka have demonstrated a unique respect for their leaders by taking measures to preserve and protect their statues. For instance, the statue of Vodiyaar in Mysore is shielded from bird droppings by umbrellas.
Goa can take a cue from Karnataka’s example and take steps to restore and maintain its statues. This could include providing a fresh coat of paint, installing protective covers, or engaging local communities in conservation efforts.
The state government and local authorities must recognize the importance of preserving these monuments and take action to ensure their longevity. By doing so, Goa can honor the legacy of its great leaders and showcase its cultural heritage with pride.
Besides these there are other statues of great Marath leader Shivaji Maharaj, father of nation Mahatma Gandhi whose statues are also seen in a very bad shape.
