Alcon GSB Unity Cup 2025 Begins with a Grand Opening Ceremony in Margao
Margao: The much-awaited Alcon GSB Unity Cup 2025, organized by the GSB Sports and Charitable Trust in collaboration with the Goa Saraswat Samaj, kicked off with a grand opening ceremony at the MCC ground in Margao on January 18, 2025. This T20 cricket tournament, featuring 32 thrilling matches, will run until March 8, 2025, promising an exciting cricketing experience for players and fans alike.
The event was inaugurated by Ashish Nehra, former Indian cricketer and head coach of Gujarat Titans, who received a standing ovation for his remarkable contribution to Indian cricket. Chirag Naik, Managing Director of Commonwealth Developers, extended a warm welcome to Ashish Nehra, expressing gratitude for his presence.
In his address, Ashish Nehra congratulated the organizers, including Aakash Naik Khaunte, Director of Alcon (Anil Counto Enterprises), and praised the Unity Cup for its vision of bringing communities together. “This initiative is not just about cricket but about fostering unity and camaraderie through sports,” said Nehra. He also lauded Goa for its growing sports facilities in recent years and encouraged players and spectators to make the most of the tournament, saying, “There’s so much to learn through sports. Let’s enjoy the next few weeks together.”
The ceremony featured the release of air balloons, symbolizing the spirit of unity and celebration. The audience was treated to a live cultural performance by Abhyuday Kala Kendra, followed by a soulful violin rendition of the national anthem by Mehaila Rodrigues, adding a touch of music and culture to the vibrant event.
Kapil Borker, Chief Tournament Coordinator, presented mementos to the dignitaries, including Ashish Nehra, Aakash Naik Khaunte, Chirag Naik, Dinesh Pai, Yogesh Naik, Prathamesh Sukthankar, and Dr. Desh Prabhudesai, in appreciation of their support and contributions to the tournament.
In his vote of thanks, Kapil Borker expressed heartfelt gratitude to Ashish Nehra for gracing the occasion and to the title sponsor, Aakash Naik Khaunte, and other esteemed sponsors and guests. “This tournament is for all the players,” said Borker. “Please use this platform to develop friendships, network, and most importantly, enjoy the game.”
The opening match, held under floodlights, featured an exciting face-off between Commonwealth Mega Strikers and Rising Stars of Antruz, setting the tone for the high-octane cricketing action to follow in the coming weeks.
