Flowers have no caste, religion but by and large all religious believers offer flowers to their beloved deities.
Some people use during special ceremonies like zatra, urus and feasts and this is being followed everywhere throughout the nation from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and from Rann of Kutch in Gujarat to Assam but flowers differ from place to place and region to region.
In Goa too there is a flower season. Some time get Surgan, Bhalsari, Mogrim, Champas, Abolios etc etc. All these flowers have season of blooming and come from remote villages of the state like Chorao, Cuncolim, Marcel and other areas in the North while in South it comes from Sanguem, Curchorem, and Quepem. These flowers mostly grown in the backyard of their houses. These flower sellers approach them and pay them accordingly.
People must have noted ladies and gents stand on the mouth of Old Mandovi bridge and holding garlands in the hands of these flower buds specially in the months of March, April and May and they sell their garlands between 3 pm and 6 pm and at the time blooming or once these buds start blooming the wind up nd go home.
They say it is believed that a devotee should offer these garlands in bud forms and when they bloom the smell spreads and the purpose is lost. These flower buds garlands should bloom after offering it to deities or dargahs as it gives genuine smell.
Some devotees do not even touch them with bare hands so that they are not dirty.
These people sell each garlands for Rs
20, 25 or Rs 30 if there many sellers and no or few buyers they sell them cheap and romp home early.
They say many women too buy from them during wedding ceremony as they offer to their beloved guests and distribute amongst family members.
They stated that in many Goan families love to wear daily during evening time adding newly wedded couples always use garlands in the hair to please their husbands.
